How do you distinguish passing fads from mainstays in new trends?
The over flooding of the same design type. Good designs like good products are always copied. Success is always copied. Once that happens it becomes a passing fad.
I don't believe in trends, I believe in wearing what suits your own body and personality.
Intuition + Experience.
I have a good eye for what sticks and what doesnt. For whats classy and whats trashy. I go with my own instinct and fashion knowledge
A trend lasts if is easy to be transformed and adapted to the commercial factor and if is aplicable to the mass costumers. Is easy to distinguish the lasting trend, by comparing the latest trends with the celebrities style. They can redirect a trend.
It's usually pretty easy to tell.
Fads and trends can look good on the catwalk, but if they look stupid on regular people they won't become mainstays.
i simply relax and watch.
very good question - ' will it last 10 years?' I try to say to myself.
When I see every H&M/Forever 21 store carry the same thing, then I know it's a fad.
Mainstays will always have classic silhouettes that one recognizes from previous time periods
Within my circle of friends I think I tend to set the trend as they follow in my way. I am very headstrong when it comes to fashion, I like to be original and this makes others feel that they can copy. I have a sixth sense when it comes to future trends in fashion, I feel it in my bones.
In my field I don't think there is either. The new trends are from days gone by and the passing fads come back.
I tend to try to start new trends on my own and just go with it, Like with the various Raver Baggy Outfit Collections I did. I don't do mainstream, I make what I feel and like, and if people like it they follow and so on *smiles*
