What research do you do for your illustrations?
Usually I'll go to the library or check online (google images, flickr.com and wikipedia.org). Sometimes I'll go to the book store if I need something more specific or current.
simple photo research on Google.
i love books so if one takes my eye i read it cover to cover and then again (i do them to death ) to absorb them fully
It depends on the subject. I often research photos related to the subject of the commission, then I use cutouts from these photos that I transform in Photoshop.
Mostly internet imagery and then books.
i have 1000's of personal photo's that i have been taking for 2 yrs now. Digital photos are fast convenient and i have lots of friends that will pose for what i need. this is what i always wanted because it elimates copy right issues
Of course, the web is the most convenient place to research pretty much anything and has greatly sped up the research process. A glance at Google usually does the trick. If I'm researching a pose or expression though, I just act it out in front of a mirror. How we suffer for our art!
Since I love costumes, I collect Dover books on historical fashion. They are a LIFESAVER. Really, really useful. I also collect books on landscapes, gardens, animals, birds and basically whatever I can find. I also use Flickr, Getty Images and Google image search quite a bit. I have a ton of bookmarked websites that I've come across with interesting high-res images.
Usually a lot! If I'm working on a portrait type of piece then I don't require as much because want I need is a very specific person. If Im doing something more conceptual than I may require a lot more because Im fabricating this person or thing out of nothing other than an idea. Sometimes I do the research and get ideas and sometimes I get ideas then do the research.
Google images. Flickr.
Sometimes I need to do extensive research on a project. I send a lot of time at the library and on the internet to find what I need.
yes, magazines, books, internet, library , and my huge stack of reference pictures.
I might poke around the net for reference, but I try to go out and get research myself.
Mainly the Web but I do have a lot of reference material as well.
I do a lot of research before starting a drawing. I look for poses, expressions, mood and complimentary objects. Sometimes I ask somebody to take pictures of me for poses. |
