What new techniques have you been experimenting with lately?

Whohub

I've been pretty darn stubborn with keeping things hand done. However, in the movie poster world, deadlines are incredibly short, and clients ask for immediate revisions. I have been experimenting with more digital techniques that I would have been SO against a few years ago. But in order to be able to push my illustration in the movie poster advertising world, I need to remain efficient.

Does not apply to agents

I've been trying to master tinted line overlays and halftones with the digital art. I've also taken a step back and started playing with washes and painting, something I didn't do anywhere near enough of in my youth.

I am really enjoying taking my traditional painting into Photoshop. I am now sketching and then digitally painting them. I know Photoshop so well that I am using it with a healthy dose of Dave Nagel paintbrushes! I am playing with drawing in Illustrator then painting the 'ink' in Photoshop.

I like combining illustration and photography.

Digital sculpting. In order to move my prototypes to metal mold making and additional flexibility for the Client, I have to incorporate the technology at hand. It's a fantastic tool!

Looseness. I've been using fewer controlled lines and more water in my washes. This makes for a random reward that once was tight.

Really getting into screen-printing at the moment.

I work with real pencil and ink on paper and I have been learning Adobe CS3. So I am getting used to drawing electronically.

My main experimenting has been refining my approach to color and experimenting with figures. I love all the Kid Robot stuff and it inspires me to push myself to be more varied with figures.

Mostly stuff in the kitchen

Lately I've been experimenting with combining 3 dimensional elements with 2 dimensional elements, which all sit on a flat 2D plane.

I've been trying to take greater advantage of computer graphics and editing without loosing the natural feel of a hand worked piece. it's a balancing act, but i'm enjoying playing with the different toys.

I guess the one area of experimentation I've been involved with lately is color theory.
