|How do you avoid repeating yourself, or falling into formula? How do you stay fresh?
I get inspiration from many places, and find my own way of formulating from that. The world is always changing, and therefore so is the way I think.
I stay fresh and avoid falling into formula by living my life always looking for inspiration. If I see something that strikes me I will take a picture of it so that I have that item to reference back to. I start with a basic idea or goal in the back of my mind that leads to research and generation of a final product. Another way I stay fresh is to vary the types of resources and materials I create with.
Imagination, your most important tool.
I have sacrificed a nuclear family and "stable" lifestyle and have travelled to work everywhere on the globe: from Singapore to Buenos Aires - I haven't "visited" - I have worked and lived in these places (with and w/o a visa!) - go for it, or fuhgetaboutit!
I simply follow my intuition.
We repeat falling into the same ideas / formulas whenever we don't watch a wide variety of videos. To stay fresh, we watch a lot of different genres of videos, and sometimes movies.
I don't think an artist ever figures that out. Not if he or she is a true artist. I think that is more a question for illustrators and those creative people whose preoccupation is with creating product. I don't think of Art as product. Art work for me is expression of ideas. In that way I have no relevant issue with exploring an idea multiple times or jumping from one to another. It is simply a reflection of life that ideas come and go, reappear and repeat, etc...
