What has been your experience with publishers?

Whohub

Self-interested, obviously its their business, mean and devious.

I don't have any. Their reputation has made me reluctant to approach them. Instead I have focused on publishing online.

I have written for some shady houses and some awesome houses. Thankfully, I am now only with the awesome houses. Newbie authors need to find the publishers who have POLISHED websites, not ones that look like their 15 y/o son made it in Front Page. AWESOME covers, no horrible photoshops or poser covers. No start ups by some unknown author who thinks they know what they're doing. I've seen it often, people think going into business as a publisher will make them some extra money. Or the only way they'll be able to publish their OWN books.

Ask the authors who are published there about the publisher before submitting. Do your homework. How long have they been in business? Are authors you've heard of published there? Do NOT send your beloved book(s) out willy nilly. You must do your own research and be discerning about it.

The fact that I self-published my first novel THE LION DOMINION should make my answer obvious.

The singular fact that almost all publishers have relegated their selection process to the Literary Agent speaks for itself.

I have had a great experience with my publisher, Liberty University Press. They have done a professional job publishing my book with integrity. Most importantly, they have provided the personal connection and touch that I desired. There is nothing worse than putting your manuscript or book in the hands of someone who treats you in such an impersonal way. Yes, it is business but this is still your book which is very important to you. When you take your child to a day care or a babysitter, you want a personal connection with those who are taking care of them. More than that, you want to utilize your personal connection at anytime you need to because you have that right with that being your child. It is the same principal with an ones book. It’s like your child.

Unfortunately, the first publisher who took on The Writer’s ABC Checklist, the book I co-authored with Lorraine Mace, went under in the credit crunch. Luckily, we found our current publisher, Accent Press, almost straight away and they’ve been great. http://www.accentpress.co.uk

The ones who published my book of genealogy tips also went bust (see a pattern here?) but that book has also found a new publisher and will be back in print shortly.

It's best to try and solicit an agent.

I've been fortunate enough to work with some wonderful people in publishing, so my experiences have all been pretty great.

Very good relationship full of encouragement.

This is a sore subject for me. I had contract once which the publisher allowed to lapse without telling me he had no intention of publishing my book. He was a micro-publisher and is now no longer in business, but he was less than honest with me about his intent and did not return my emails concerning my book until a week after it was due out, and then insisted that he had sent me an email telling me his new backers did not feel the book was appropriate to his market. This happened during a time in which I was very fragile; I ended up not writing *anything* for three years after that. A lot of stuff was going on in my life at that time, and I was so depressed, I came very close to killing myself.

So experience with publishers? Bad, very bad -one of the reasons I will only *give my work away* on my terms.

Most big publishers are not interested in talking to authors who haven't had a few books published by a smaller outfit first. And they are only interested in authors who are prepared to go out and promote themselves and market their books as hard as possible.

If you have a success with a small publisher, those self-same big publishers will make a bee-line for your door offering you contracts and promising big rewards. But look closely at the small print: more often than not, if you are good at promoting and marketing your own books, you can end up earning less money with a big publisher than you can with a smaller publisher.

My experience so far with publishers has been good. Rejections aren't fun but I have always learned something from them. I've had a bit of a come down since I first submitted. The first work I ever submitted was a short story that was accepted to be part of a print anthology. The second story I submitted was a full length novel that was accepted by a publisher I am still with - SirenBookstrand. I've since started working with Evernight Publishing.

Expanding my portfolio beyond ebooks is proving to be hard but I am determined!

None! I haven't sent anything out because my book isn't finished yet.

I haven't had any experience yet with publishers. I look forward to it.

Pretty good really. The people at Impress, who published my first novel are just lovely to work with. You need to be sensible and flexible, but there is give and take on both sides. When you start out writing, you are inexperienced and the experience of your publisher can be invaluable. Of course the big publishers spend more on publicising you and your book, but a deal with a small publisher has a friendly feel and at least gets your book out in print and into bookshops.
