I do tweet on twitter occasionally. (I'm @brotherpaul) But, I don't go and seek people out on the other social sites. If someone seeks me out, I'll respond, be it on Linkedin or Facebook. (As long as they don't want me to join in on some silly game on Facebook, which I think is a waste of time.)

In the past I was part of a weekly chat named "Death By The Pen". Back than I regularly visited literature related websites. But these days that's very rare.
I use the internet more for research and less for writing communication. It is difficult to form friendships or communiques with other writers. You are either perceived the student or the teacher. Quite frankly I could care less about either role. And finding a peer who feels like I do about writing is not possible because like myself they are rather be writing or raising a family rather than blabbing about process or ebooks or the future of the book, etc.

I use Linkedin for connections with other writers and read about their experiences and learn from them :-)
