What do you surround yourself with in your work area in order to help your concentrate?
With as much silence as possible. When Liza, my cat decides to sit by my computer, that is OK. But after three instances of scratching books, trying to eat scrap paper, or digging in the wastebasket, out she goes with the door closed. And I put a book on the floor when I close the french doors on her because she knows how to get the doors open.
I’m always trying to clear the clutter in my office. But I do have a small collection of assorted little people from around the world (wood and ceramic) that look down from a shelf over my keyboard.
A window to see a local creek and nature strip. A cupboard full of books and references. A pot of red tea.
Conducive atmosphere. If you can't find it, then imagine.
I don't have a set work area, but I do like to work in a place that is not loud or busy.
I prefer absolute solitude with a dictionary and my computer for company.
Books, books and more books.
I have my own studio for writing at home. Tall, red camellia trees and orange roses are outside my wrought iron balcony which is painted a turquoise blue. My walls are filed with designs and drawings by Erte and Ikart. I framed a black and white photograph of Marlene Dietrich. There are framed photos of Niccolo,my precocious grandchild. My daughters and sons . Ca va sans dire, my husband. I have a portrait of Lawrence of Arabia, Gertrude Bell and Sir Richard Francis Burton. The walls are painted a bright lemon yellow.Reference books abound in English, Italian, Latin, and Castilian. Plants are everywhere. I am partial to avocado plants. There are about 7 by my desk. Six cyclamen bowls sit on the marble floor of my grilled balcony. My palazzo is 250 years old.I cannot write without Music, although some difficult chapters I find Silence to be truly golden. My files are made of olive wood as I cannot stand the sight of metal ones. I love paper dolls especially those dealing in fashion since I used to be PR for Gucci. I have Elsa Schiaparelli, Balenciaga and Molyneaux ensembles placed on heavy duty white cardboard which makes them appear as if they are on stage. These hung on my yellow walls. I love working and spending time in my writing studio.   | | |
I have a writing office in our house, which is a great help.
Just music. Music helps focus my mind and create mood. Don't mind what the actual settings are.
As little as possible. My notes and a little salt rock lamp for good luck.
Nothing special.
I like to keep my work area clean.
I have a big flat desk with a file organizer in the corner.
I keep books I use as references on a bookshelf behind me.
The phone is nearby so I can answer it.
I have two monitors in case I'm editing from someone's online critique.
I have a stand to put printed and edited chapters on.
I have a recycling bin that's overflowing with edited chapters.
