What do you surround yourself with in your work area in order to help your concentrate?
Nothing special
Literally? I have about 4 different messenger bags and back packs filled with mulitiple organizer binders that are stuffed with all my hard copies. And I have about 4 different journal books that I scribble ideas and notes. I literally surround myself with these things so that I can grab any one of them without getting off the couch, which is my favorite place to write. There's always a big plastic cup filled with ice somewhere near 'cause I like to have some kinda cold beverage while I write. I'll drink about a dozen Miller Highlifes when I'm feeling the need for full-frontal honesty.
I created a writers corner in my house. I made my own desk from a art deco bed. I surround myself with stuff from my childhood. I put pictures on the wall next to me that visualise the story that I write. Every time before I start writing I light a candle and use a nice smell. My writing place is magic.
Air.
music or silence.
For the most part I just need peace and quiet which is hard to get around my house. A quiet place for the most part is all I need.
Trance worthy music. That is mostly new age stuff, but some Baroque and Classical also works.
Good lighting, silence or CDS. Heat and plenty of pens and paper.
I have a calendar with photographs of my grandson - one for each month - on it, by the computer. I'm by the window which looks out on to the roof terrace and in the distance, if it's not misty, I can see Beachy Head, and the South Downs as far as Firle Beacon near Lewes. I gaze at the Downs for inspiration.
Only the equipment I need at every stage of each project.
Absolute silence, classic music, thick night, inspiring weather and the presence of beloved ones or inspiring nature...I can't predict what best suits me though I am presently happy and comfortable with the above settings. The film music of Ilayaraja, a South Indian music director, inspires me much to write well.
I prefer working in solitude and silence. Although music is often my inspiration, it is easier for me to work in a quiet environment.
I like to listen to music on my computer. It can be classical, opera, soft rock, classic rock, contemporary, or alternative music.
Books and clutter. I write best surrounded by both.
