Do you participate in competitions? Have you received any awards?
I competed in the 2008 Reader View contest with memoirs. I received the "Reviewers Choice Award 2008 Semi-Finalist" for the non-fiction Memoir/Autobiography genre. I was thrilled.
No
No.
Entered a few contests, didn't even make honorable mention
I can't remember what I've won; obviously none of it was all that prestigious or I'd probably remember. Well, I did win a recipe contest in recent years. I won a trip to Jamaica. That I remember! I won a minor photography honor in Japan about two decades ago. These days competitions want entry fees that I can't afford so I don't enter them; I might, otherwise. I won a minor prize at Helium.com.
Short answer: no. I entered a screenplay in a locala screenplay competition once, but it didn't make the final cut.
My out of genre book, "Simple Survival, A Family Outdoors Guide," is a silver medal winner for best "how to book", 2005, from the Military Writers Society of America. I shy away from competitions because I don't have the time.
Yes, and yes.
I am not a very competitive person, I did receive an award once for writing an essay for my local public Library, it was entitled, "Why I love the Detroit Public Library".
I have never had even the slightest interest in writing competition.
Yes, I participate in competitions. My novel Sarah's Landing-I-Contact won the APA Award for one of the best new audio books in 2001. I've also won a first place award for a short story I submitted for a town-wide competition in my town.
Yes. Only for the poem Autumn's Turning. I wouldn't call it an award, but it placed semifinal in poetry at the Faulkner-Wisdom writers competition.
Yes and yes. I was the winner of Red Room's http://www.redroom.com/member/roguenovelist "Most Memerable Summer Read" writing contest in San Francisco. The reward was fifteen first edition 2008 books.
I've won several contests, some for stories in anthologies I've participating in. The Electronically Published Internet Connection (EPIC) has awards every year in a contest where winners receive EPPIES. I have one for Becoming Your Own Critique Partner, a non-fiction book on writing with my co-author Janet Walters (also a JOTQ member). Plus three other Eppies for my stories in multi-author anthologies, a Bookrak Award for best-selling series book, and a Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal RWA Chapter award for best dark fantasy. And, hey, a whole raft of finalist awards in various contests.
I haven't entered competitions, other than a couple of poetry contests. I'm sorry to say that I didn't win. Oh well, what's writing without a bit of rejection! |
