Do you participate in competitions? Have you received any awards?

Whohub

If you go to http://Writing.Com/authors/armina you can see some of them.
I also won an award for a story I wrote for the Riverside Nurse (non fiction).

When I first started writing, I entered competitions. It is a way to make sure your writing is read. My first short story won an honorable mention in Writers Digest's short story competition -- that encouraged me to keep writing.

Since then, my books have won honors. It's nice to have that confirmation from the industry.

I have entered some poetry competitions over the years, but really not very many. I find them kind of discouraging in that there are always many entries in every category and you cannot know what that season's judges' personal style preferences are and you really have to choose the right work at the right moment and be both talented and lucky at the same time. Also, you usually have a stiff entrance fee and not much to entice you as far as prizes. No awards for me, to date.

I have never participated in any competition other than the main one--trying to find someone to publish my books!

Awards: On the Devil's Court, Young Adult Book of the Year in South Carolina.
Heart of a Champion: YA Book of the Year in Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Tennessee
Night Hoops: YA Book of the Year, Nebraska
High Heat: YA Book of the Year, Nebraska
Other novels nominated for YA Book of the Year in many states.

They love me in Nebraska! Go Big Red!

Not as of yet, but I have been thinking about it. I think NaNoWriMo is wonderful and someday I might actually contribute something.

I participate in the occasional competition. I've received three awards as a result:

1st place-- Zola Award, mainstream novel category, (Pacific Northwest Writers Association)

1st place -- Zola Award, Young Adult category (PNWA)

3rd place -- Young Adult category (PNWA)

Yes. I got the Editor Choice Best Award from Poetry House, Marryland in 2008.

No. I really have not had the time to do so.

I came in third in the Mt. Horeb Mustard Museum mystery contest one year, along with a co-author. I though that was very exotic and cool.
Normally, I don't participate in competitions, though.

I am not a celebrity. No, I have not competed.

Only once when I was a pup. I entered the National Poetry Contest and won second prize. Actually I am in the midst of a heated conversation on Sulekha.com about their Blogger of the Year Contest. I sometimes partake in my Blogsite's contests, but very occasionally.

First and foremost there are only two types of contests I would consider being part of" 1) A transparent jury of my peers or 2) Transparent rules and credentials of judges. Let me make my point with poetry. Free verse is the easiest form of poetry to write, yet it is something poets either avoid or write AFTER they master meter and rhyme and the elements of poetry. I sure would not want a bunch of free verser's who did not know the elements of a sonnet or what iambic pentameter was to be judging my poems. If you want to be a poet there are no shortcuts. You need to learn meter and rhyme, not just make your poem appear to look like a poem.

I competed a lot at culinary school, won several prices and I won a poetry contest once.

I do and I have. Several of my short stories and poems have won contests. I have won the Maria Cerjak award for avant/garde writing. In 2006 and 2008 I was nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

No

Yes, I participate in online competitions and I run an online awards program. I have received several awards for my long running Musings by MoonLight series of adult fandom based fiction. I am always proud of these awards but having competed in so many of these things and running my own they've sort of lost their luster. In the realms I compete in they're very political...snobby even. I'm one of the most down-to-Earth people you'll ever know so that doesn't go over well with me. Still, it's nice to be recognized for your hard work.
