Do you participate in competitions? Have you received any awards?
A couple of poetry/haiku competitions. Won two first prizes years ago.
Yes and No!
I received an award of 10,000 dollars U. S.back in the late 70's when I wrote an essay in Castilian and in English for the Ministry of Tourism in Spain. It was called "Galicia: Tierra Esmeralda de Espana." I am pleased to see that the bureaucrats at the Ministry are still using my title in their publicity campaigns concerning Galicia.
I live in the Italian Riviera. There are better ways to spend my money than participating in competitions. I suspect many are rigged. With the world financial Depression, competitions of this sort often turn into a circuses. In Italy I regularly attend the Women's Fiction Festival in Matera. The writers are great fun. The publishers come for the fine Italian wines and cuisine which is gratuitous. They, as well as the agents are totally skunked come interview time. None of them have impressed me. I am not planning to attend this year as I may just start my own festival in Genoa with the financial backing of private foundations which abound in Genoa.
Yes and yes. Winner of NY Foundation of the Arts award in fiction, Winner of a Goldenberg Fiction Prize, National Magazine Award Finalist, Nickelodeon Screenwriting Award Finalist, Fade In/Writers Net Screenwriting SemiFinalist.
I don't participate in competions nowadays but when I was a child I entered a limerick writing competition for the TV show Blue Peter and came second and when I was in my final year at University I entered a competition with a women's magazine to write a blockbuster and I came second with that and won a word processor (very handy for my last year thesis). No awards - yet.
Oh yes. I won the best essay in Fourth Grade for writing "My Favorite American: Lucille Ball." Everyone else chose characters such as Lincoln or George Washington and so I won for sheer originality. I am very proud of winning that contest.
I don't enter competitions. My work has been recognized as follows:
Notable Children’s Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies
YALSA Recommended Book for Young Adult Readers
Chicago Reading Round Table Award
Fellow, National Critics Institute
1998 Op-Ed Slam World Champion
I've never competed thus never receved any awards.
I entered the CBC literary awards a few years ago, but nothing came of it. I keep intending to enter more competitions, but haven't found the time. It's tough for someone inexperienced to separate the good ones from the bad and the worthwhile ones from the ripoff scams.
No.
Here and there. I have more disappointments than I do accomplishments.
I am the Susan Lucci The Moth storytelling events, always second place. (www.themoth.org). Oh, and I got this poetry award in high school, but since the only way to ever see my "published" work was to pay $50 for the book, I'm thinking that was a scam...
My new poetry collection, PRISONER’S DILEMMA, won the 2008 Lopside Press chapbook competition.
Several times a year.
I place in most of those I enter.
