Do you participate in competitions? Have you received any awards?
No and no.
I can't handle the idea of competitive writing. It's too personal for me to try and compete at. It's kind of the catch-22. You can bear to part with stuff you don't care about and that's the kind of material that's mediocre. You wouldn't want to enter that into a competition. But the stuff that matters, the stuff that makes you feel something every time you read it, that's the stuff you could never put into a competition.
Nope, and nope.
Yes, I do. I received a prize of 5 Penguin books for a poetry contest.
I would love to say yes to this question, but the truth is I usually don't participate. Either an entry fee is too high and I can't afford it, or I simple can't come up with anything really good. I have done very few competitions though, and they were so long ago I don't remember them. NO awards have been won though, since I don't do it often enough.
We have hosted competitions for residents and high school students.

Personally, I have received multiple awards:

I don't compete anymore. I find it to be a waste of time and energy and often it costs money I don't have. I have not received any awards, however I have had recognition of my work that I am proud of.
Summer 2009 won 1st place in the creative non-fiction contest in New York Press. I continue to send work out and it has often been accepted into book anthologies after a call for entries. That seems kind of like a contest too. I can be very determined and competitive. It spices up life and makes things fun.
I entered one competition and didn't win. On re-reading the story months later I realized that I had rushed the ending after spending weeks creating a dramatic opening.
NO
Not yet. I've been held down in a public government service for 23 years. Just recently laid off. Awards have only been given by those in supervision over me, and my co-workers. I currently have a 'aspie' autistic son to raise alone & unemployed. There were several awards given in much younger years - but they are just memories for me now.
To be updated in the near future.
No. No.
I haven't yet had the time or completed work to enter any competitions.
Just this week, I found out that my short story won the first level of a contest called "The Alabama Penman Creative Writing Contest". I'll go on to the next level next week and be judged there. I have to admit that this is the first time I've felt confident enough to submit any of my work, so it's the only competition I've won. |
