Does reader feed-back help you?
Yes it helps. But I stay true to who I am.
For those who have read my stories, it helps tremendously. I am so involved with my stories I miss things because I know why the characters do things and sometimes, with the revisions, I forget to convey that in print.
Definitely. Love to know what people think. I may often react and disagree but it makes me think.
Absolutely. If I'm putting something out into the world than feedback becomes like food and air. Constructive criticism can be great. It lets me target areas of my work which I can improve upon next time. I always find it useful and I hate to think what my work would be today without the feedback I've received over the years.
Yes, of course.
Reader feedback is a wonderful learning tool - if people care about what you've created, they will happily tell you what they think, how they felt, and why you have touched them. That is the most brilliant form of learning there is - to hear it from the people who have taken the time to spend with your creations. Negative comments are even more useful than positive in some cases, though criticism for the sake of simply trashing someone does no one any good, least of all the writer.

On occasions. When my research could've been better and someone points me in the right direction that is always helpful. Comments about narrative I tend to ignore. I have found my voice and I like the way it sounds. But I acknowledge it's not for everyone.
Of course. If you want to get published or see your story optioned for a film then it has to be liked by someone. You won't please everyone but those initial comments you get from the first sets of feedback are incredibly useful. They'll tell you if your narrative structure works, your characters do what you intend them to do and most importantly if it is good. Don't get too carried away trying to please everyone but take the feedback on board and make it work for the story.
Absolutely. I'm pleased to say that it's only been positive so far from people I've never met but my writing group members are invaluable and have probably 'saved my skin' a few times.
Absolutely! I wish my site had more comments, actually.
Yes! My children's book was given a few suggestions and ideas. It really helped and changed the book for the better.
Definitely. Both pats-on-the-back and gentle kicks lower on the anatomy.
I also find my for hire manuscript critique service engenders a sense of community and is a form of writing exploration.
I think so. Assuming the person reading the story gives you constructive criticism as to how you can better yourself and your writing. And it's really important to see what works in a story and what doesn't.
I've never had anyone read what I've written outside of school, but it depends on who reads it because I feel that some people would be biased to tell you that it's good when it's really not. |
