Yes, when it's honest and constructive. I would much rather get a well thought out, kind criticism of the "you suck" variety than somebody telling me they liked it just because that's what they want to hear.

Reader feed-back is very important to me and I have always the same group of people who read my stuff. People of differend social groups and age, people I can trust and who give me constructive feed-back on my work without sugarcoating it.
Absolutely! It is critical to success. My novel was reviewed by 15 people, some strangers. When they finished reading I grilled them and poked them with sticks. How can it be improved? Describe my characters? Could you put it down? Did you want to keep reading? Grammar, edits... everything.
My reviewers included a published author, avid readers and two archaeologists - as it is very important my story is factual and realistic.
It has now been formally edited and the editorial letter stated it was one of the best works of fiction they had read and there was little editing required.

Immeasurably - I have belonged to two live critique groups, one for over 21 years and a master group of published authors. I believe I would never have been pubbed without insightful feedback from other writers.
Yes reader feed back helps a lot. First of all, the feeling i get knowing someone actually read what i wrote is awesome!!!! Some of the feed back i've gotten over time has improved my writing - they tell me to do this and that and i do that and my writing comes out better. I'm really impressed with myself so far
It depends. If it is constructive critique then yes but if it isn't constructive then I will often second guess myself. |
