Does reader feed-back help you?
Sometimes. You have to be careful who you listen to. Sometimes readers just want to be heard or rant, no necessarily about you and what you wrote. Sometimes you are just a pretext. Do not listen to those. But sometimes you get really good insight and ideas from readers. Telling the difference is tricky.
As I'm a first-time novelist that has just started vol. 2, my experience is truly limited. From that limited experience I can say that feedback helps tremendously if given constructively. Professional feedback is great for that. However, plain meanness has never helped anyone. If someone was to tell me I'm no good and my books should be burned to dust, that would mainly encourage me to keep writing. So, I guess it would have been helpful in a way, too!
Feedback in any form is helpful.
Yes. Although it might take a while before I fully appreciate the feedback. But you have to filter it. You can have contradictory feedback so you have to accept that which resonates with your inner doubts and discard that which you think is irrelevant or which just doesn't 'get' what you're trying to do.
Only good feedback. Critics are ten a penny.
Reader feed-back does help because there is always room to grow and constructive criticism helps in identifying points for improvement.
If it's good! I had lots of good feedback for one book and then one bad one. That bad review stopped me writing for about a month. Honestly, why is it that we take the negatives to heart?
Yes, I like feed-back. I am mostly amazed when people rave about my articles but some do (in a positive sense.) I don't often get people who approach me in a negative way. Some very religious people tend to criticize me or want me to shut up. With what I write about Jesus Christ and say his daughter or Mary Magdalen or the Shroud, or the Roslin chapel I'm bound to be criticized by strict religious groups, but I like to point out to them that they are not the only ones who have freedom of speech.
Yes. I'm a young writer with so much to learn. When people give me feed back I take that use it then and in the future.
Always. I have as many readers read as possible.
No real experience.
It is absolutely one of the most wonderful perks about writing. The responses I have received — from all over the world! — to "The Sum of My Parts" and "Au Naturel" have been a constant source of delight for me. Most people are extremely kind and thoughtful. Even if they have criticisms I do try to respond, although I had one guy who wrote some very odd stuff about "Sum" and I didn't even know where to begin in trying to open a dialogue with him. I would say 99 percent of reader feedback is encouraging, uplifting and enriching. Honestly, I wish I got more.
Yes, it is always a privilege to know that people are taking out time to read your work. One should always respect that fact and try to learn from whatever feedback comes your way.
Yes! The best thing about blogging in the reader feedback. Hands down. |
