Are you equally good at telling stories orally?
I teach poetry writing in schools... I often improvise a story, or a situation, or a series of metaphors.
Yes. Maybe better in some ways. It doesn't scare me so much. I have an acting/stand-up background, so oral story-telling comes naturally to me.
Also, when I was very young, I made up stories to calm my sister because we were frightened by our circumstances.

No. I'm hopeless! I can't even dictate into a recorder. I was given a speech recognition programme which is a great thing to play around with, but I just can't compose anything with it. I have to see the words coming onto the screen from my fingers.

I remember what some think is an impossible amount to remember so I guess the answer to that is yes.
All my writings are like children. And some of my short stories I can recite as well, though granted not always verbatim, but close enough to keep the general message itself in tact.
I've actually done that with "The Bum" which although a short story, isn't the shortest story most will see in thier lives:)

No! I hate speaking in front of people unless they are close friends.
I wish that I was equally good at telling a story orally, however I find it much easier to tell a story in writing. Besides if you tell a story in writing there won't be anything left out because no matter how many times you read it, the story remains the same. A story told orally can be changed and it may loose it's integrity.
My audiences think so...but I wouldn't want to listen to me for any length of time. I have a drone, monotone voice.
No, not particularly -- because I always want to go back, repeat myself, and edit something I've already said! "No, that's not right; it really happened like this... "

I am much better at writing than verbally expressing myself.
YES. I have the privilege of working for VSA Arts of Florida. They are a part of International Aritists in Schools. They send me to schools to tell stories and talk about writing to handicapped students. I enjoy this so much, I incorporate at least one story in all my presentations. There is enough child in almost everyone to enjoy a story. |
