What voice do you find most to your liking: first person or third person?
First person, with out a doubt. I absolutely detest third person and I will not touch a book with it done that way.
My most recent work has been in first person; I didn’t make a conscious decision, it was just what ’feels right‘ for this particular character.
Some of my earlier work is in third person, but many of those texts were writing assignments with the kind of creative-writing-class topic that strongly hints at either first or third person without actually mentioning it. When left to my own devices, I tend to gravitate towards first person in creative writing, and towards third person in (oral) storytelling.
Since I’ve been a technical writer for many years, I’m also quite comfortable in the second person. I’ve never tried this in creative writing, but I feel I should some day. Just because it’s there.
Third person works naturally for me, although I have dabbled in first person (short stories).
Both. Right now the sleuth in my Sloane Monroe series is in first person, but I am excited to change it up and write something after this series in third person.
I use both. My short stories tend to be contemporary, and I frequently use first person present tense for those. For a novel, I usually use third person, past tense.
While I like first persons sense of immediacy, third person (ltd) works best for the large cast of characters with which I work. I find it allows better access to mulitple "angles" of the story, giving the reader more leeway to reach their own conclusions instead of being governed by a single POV.
Both equally; it all depends upon the piece.
I am writing a story now in the first person, but have read plenty written in the third and have found them very enjoyable to read.
So far all the things I’ve had published are in first person past tense. They’re told by Sam Jenkins in sort of a memoir or reminiscence style. I’d like my reader to think they’re sitting in a restaurant overhearing a veteran cop telling a war story to his friends.
With first person it’s easy to maintain a constant point of view (POV). I’m terrible getting the POV shifts straight in 3rd person. Maybe I should practice more.
I prefer first person over third person.
I've written in both first and third person. I tend to feel my comfortable writing in first person for novels and third for short stories.
I find first person to be easier to write. I can just write whatever I'm thinking as though I'm telling the story around the campfire.
However, I can organize my thoughts better in third person. By taking the extra time to craft a story rather than "telling" it, I feel I can better draw the reader into the world I've created.
I'm finishing up a book I wrote in first person at the moment. And while I am happy with how it's coming out, it has taken a lot more editing and rewriting than my third person work because I've found description to be much more difficult.
Whatever voice must be able to be heard.
I prefer third person, but my recently finished detective story was written in first person. It was a pleasant change and am contemplating doing a western in first person.
I'm writing books in first at the moment, but before that always in third. I prefer third. |
