What voice do you find most to your liking: first person or third person?
Third. I always feel like a stranger to my story. Or like I'm watching a movie.
Usually third person, as first person is the most difficult form to write in, even though I find it difficult not to slip into it at times when writing. Thankfully my Editor pulls me up when that happens lol.
They each have their place. Each will set a unique tone. A parable would be best with third, while a noir story might work best with first, for example. I think I have more fun with third, today, but that might change tomorrow.
3rd
I write in a mix of both first and third for some books and third for others. I use what works for the story.
First every time. A conversation directly between my main character and the reader. the only question then becomes how much can the reader trust my main character? How reliable are they? How manipulative? Oh what fun we have...
At the moment I like first person. A few years ago I liked the third person. It all depends on the character and on the plot.
I like writing in third person. Third person lets you see what everybody is thinking and doing. You can also have side plots or scene changes away from the protagonist to see what the antagonist could be cooking up for the protagonist. You have a perspective without bounds. First person seems to put limitations on perspective since it is all based on what the main character is thinking and feeling and what they see. I don't like to read many books written in first person, so I don't write that way either.
Third person. I find it more flexible.
I guess I'd have to say first person. Althrough I've done both.
I'm a mix of both.
I use both. The determining factor is usually the story - whether I need to be able to tell the reader about things that are happening that are not in the view of the protagonist or first person, or do I want the reader to wonder about those things.
I write in first person.
I like writing in first more since most of my writings tend to come out of experiences whether heard or lived off.
I do write both first and third person but I think I have a slight preference for first. |
