What type of reading inspires you to write?
Poetry and the poetic novelists: Beckett, Brautigan, Duras.
The Bible. It's a wealth of knowledge and a tremendous source of ideas.
I read every type of genre, non-fiction as well as fiction. But my preference is any historical novel, especially those that portray the period and the characters accurately.
I feel most inspired reading other writer's stories. When I get my latest issue of Writer's Digest or The Writer in the mail I want to get cracking on my ideas. I also feel inspired when I read a really well written or intriguing article in a magazine. It makes me feel like I want to write a piece equally good, if not better and inspire someone from it.
Reading good writers always inspires me. I love Carl Hiassen's mysteries. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Juno Diaz was wonderful and inspired me to experiment with writing in ways that before I'd always dismissed as cliché. I love to read and read and write voraciously, the same way I try to live life.
Anything. I'll read anything printed.
Everything. Everything I read inspires me one way or another. There are times when I read a book and I get bored. I file that away, something I do not want my readers to feel. Paragraphs that have no point, file. I would never want to waste my readers time. Filler words (my biggest peave). Or something that had me on the edge of my seat, wow what a gift to be able to do that for someone else. Inspiration can come from simply the acknowledgments at the beginning of the book.
Memoirs and "How To's."
I like writing that is unafraid to be great. That means not only "The Great Gatsby" and an Orwell essay but a print ad that is intelligent and informs. You won't get that from a tv commercial but you will get it from an episode of "Mad Men"
Romance. especially if it's humorous.
Comics inspire me as well as books on history.
I sooo love reading dramatic novels and that inspires me to write. But on top of that, I prefer humorous piece to fire my creativity!
Spirtual readings and first person narrative.
Motivational reading. Reading that identify a problem but also give inspirational message to solve the problem. Reading that says, 'though u've fail, but you can do more.' Books that educate me positively, empower my life vocationally, train my memory to creat fresh ideas and make me simile when I'm sad are the book that mark my live!
As a matter fact, i read everything. But not every piece help me inspired. It's kind of difficult to generate what 'type'. |
