What respect does the reality phenomenon deserve? What experiences have you had with this genre?
Reality phenomenon? You mean like 'Blair Witch Project' / 'Cloverfield' type films? I quite like the idea of going against Hollywood but at the same time the techniques have been overused so much since the genre was born.
The fact that "Reality" has become such low-brow entertainment is depressing if you're someone working seriously to push the limits of TV or film as art, but it also serves a purpose. Sure, it's just mindless entertainment and that purpose is pretty mundane, but it's a purpose nonetheless.
yawn
It has become a dirty word but really there is an incredible variety. Some require serious filming skill. Some are enormously socially important. I think a generalisation here is not possible.
It's a trend. I like that genre in films like "The Blair Witch Project" or "Distirct 9" or "Cloverfiled" but it doesn't apply to all films and shouldn't.
I assume you mean the bad kind of reality TV, as opposed to documentaries, in which case I think it deserves a kick in the teeth, along with all the money grabbing jackwhores who make it. It is almost single handedly dumbing down the humans of this planet.
I don't have much experience in this "genre" and don't enjoy it in any way. I don't think it is used properly. In a documentary kind of way - sure, but what has been done now with it- does not deserve my respect at all.
We live in a digital information age. Who are we to purify one form from the other. My position lies on intent. If the filmmaker intentionally has a choice, I'll respect it. Oftentimes, I can spot "accidents" or when a film didn't know what it wanted to be. The "reality" genre is fine if used with proper intent.
Oh it's bullshit. Deserves no respect at all - Kim Kardashian is the biggest hack in the business. Living her life like an open wound and then complaining that the papers don't give her any privacy. Hey - if you're gonna fall all over the streets, obviously it's gonna be in the papers.
I have no experience with the reality phenomenon except as a viewer. I do not have much respect for the genre as I feel it cheapens the industry (much cheaper to create than a well-produced comedy or drama).
I hate reality TV. Reality in "Found Footage". I don't care how a film is shot, if the story and characters are fresh, thats the key for me.
It's mostly disposable, but gems are here and there. A majority of these shows are "soft-scripted," anyway, so what is "reality"...?
there is good reality and bad reality in my opinion.
the Kardashians is bad reality. reality shows the inspire is good reality.
I am a reality tv producer, as my day job.
It's bubble gum. Bubble gum plays a minor part in art I suppose, but I'd rather focus on other things!
I believe that reality programing is the lowest form of media there is and doesn't deserve the time it takes away from actual well produced, well acted, well photographed, well edited television. |
