Shapes, color, concept: where do you usually begin when conceiving a design?
I research compettitors, see where I think they are doing good, doing bad and where I can improve, then I start with putting together a basic wireframe, and see what works, then move onto more subtle details, content, refine..etc
Sketching - always sketching
I begin my designing with shape. Like what size would this design compliment.
That depends on the project. Most are very specific market, persona and price driven. There is a process if internal development first, where I look at all and everything that exists, both competitive and related. I also like to look back historically. By this I mean the history back to Ancients. There are social and spiritual connections to almost everything we use. When I have this broad view, then it is time to look for my variation on that object. I start with sketching ideas and move quickly into 3D.
I usually start at the concept, defining the key message for the design, then after research and planning i would love at colour schemes
simple, black, minimalistic, girly, womanly

I let the space speak to me. Sometimes you walk into a room and immediate visualize what it could be, other times you have take all your measurements and spend time at the drafting board before the design unfolds.
I also spend a lot of time talking to my client and observing their life style, how the family interacts, what their habits are. Ultimately I'm designing for them.
Concept. Design is about communication. Without a clear understanding of what you are trying to say, shapes and colours are meaningless.
That depends on the project. I follow a step-by-step design and concept approach with every project.
If anyone starts with color or shapes they need to quit this shit and go to business school. Concept is what you need first, so research is where you start. I'm a designer, not an old lady taking a painting class at the Rec Center.
I usually start with a concept from all the information I have gathered from a client then the shapes & colors will come naturally as the process progresses.
My first port of call is the bead warehouse. I only make pieces incorporating semi-precious gemstones and it is the beauty of the stones which initially draws me to them. Once the right stones are selected I find that the design ideas flow freely.
I have more ideas than I know what to do with--my designs usually conceive themselves.
