Shapes, color, concept: where do you usually begin when conceiving a design?
I usually begin with a concept and flow lines then branch out from there.
Concept!
by using shapes and images
Basic, bold colors; and also details in the human face.
Concept. I generally listen to my client and determine exactly what he or she is looking for.
Concept, shapes, and color last. For me it's mostly the concept
A blank sheet of paper is always a great place to start.
Concept. I like to start building list of words.
concept... then a piece of paper and anything I can use to draw
I gather all the "known" text and images and try to come up with a hook that will tie everything together. Once I have a hook or concept then I work on developing images. The colors tend to come from there.
With typefaces, sometimes I will see some old lettering somewhere that has the potential to become a typeface design. Sometimes I will just be doodling letters (something I do a lot) and a concept will emerge. Sometimes I will play a game in which I imagine a hybrid between two or more existing typefaces.
I begin with the concept, shape it and then color it.
Concept. I go for a walk with a pen and sketchpad and let my mind flow while taking in the scenery, sights and sounds.
I always start with concept and/or "feel". I try to achieve a visual punchline with a juxtaposition of content or a sense of atmosphere, which is usually achieved with typography or some sort of layered elements.
I try to go from both ends toward the middle: what might make an interesting visual — what might make an interesting concept? Hopefully an answer that satisfies both presents itself at some point (usually in the shower or while trying to sleep). |
