Generally I don't need to promote my work, I've had all the work I can handle through referrals. I am trying out social networking media and blogs just as an experiment to gain more knowledge of their value in marketing so I can better serve my clients.
I keep a Facebook page updated for my business, I update my web portfolio regularly and mail out samples of my work a few times a year to business owners who may be in need of affordable design as well as design agencies and fellow freelancers.

Mostly via word of mouth, or people finding a link at the bottom of one of the sites we have created. Our website is the number source for people to find out about what we do and the services we offer.

Since I am still relatively new of being on my own as a freelance designer I am working right know on developing relationships with potential clients as I believe that is by far the best form of marketing. Finding out what companies may need, what they want, and if they are companies that I feel comfortable with, and they are comfortable enough with me.
I promote my work through user testing and of course my portfolio. I go out and ask people what they think, and what else can be improved. If I get enough people that want to buy it, I'd make some more and start selling it to vendors. Since I'm still pretty early in my career, I havn't gotten to this point yet.
At first I started out like everyone else - newspapers, flyers, direct mail etc. Then I realized how powerful the internet has become and I use it to it's fullest. Between all my websites, blogs, forums and everything else I do online, my SEO's are VERY high. If you Google "Color Specialist, Charlotte" I'll be the first few pages of information. That's how my clients found me - via internet. I also receive clients via word of mouth which is the best kind of advertising you can get. I've lost a lot of money experimenting with the yellow pages and mailings. I find that if someone needs color for their home, they are going to search the internet and they can find me there - call me - we can have color for your home in a little over an hour!
Direct mail, mass email, and door to door. Really don't like cold calling, mainly because I hate it so much when I receive it.
