What has been your career path? How have you arrived to the point where you are? What did you do before?
The book I made is just a hobby project and not a career. My job is CIO in a Menthal Care Hospital organisation in the Netherlands (http://www.ggz-nhn.nl)
The fact that I started making the book is that Apple announced TexTbooks and the Ibook Author application for Mac and I believe in this kind of new books and wanted to find out for myself how it works, just like a lot of other things in the past years. The fact that I had to find a good subject for a book and I like astronauts and rockets and we had a Dutchman in Space was a perfect combination. The rest is history....
In the long-term my destiny was set quite early: I hand-printed my first neighborhood newsletter at age 9. About the same time, I wrote my first short-story. In high school, I booked my first band for the prom (after discovering them rehearsing in my apartment building basement).
I learned business skills (typing & shorthand) in high school. Went the corporate route, then blended them all together, literally dancing the line between the traditional and entrepreneurial: Day (office work) & Night (producing live entertainment).
I worked a lot for free to gain recognition in the entertainment spectrum, which worked to my advantage to a certain extent.
Cable TV shows eventually led to network TV news.
Now I review media, lifestyles and health from my living room, bringing my expertise and personal experiences into the mix.
I have always been a storyteller. First as an actor and playwright and now a documentary filmmaker. Theater is great training for learning how to tell a story, the importance of character and developing a great work ethic to get the job done. Often times it translates into working two jobs. But I love telling stories with the camera so the work schedule doesn't feel punishing.
I went to university and studied animation but when I was there I had wanted a chance to do some live action filming and editing, so I got a job filming videos for the army. During that time I brought animation into the role and learnt Maya and polished my After Effects skills a bit more. After 2 years, I left that job as I couldn't get any further in that company and I wanted to work on new projects.
I'm educated as a dancer and I also worked in fashion business as a model and later as a photographer and event producer.
After majoring in playwriting, I moved to LA. There, I worked my way up in film and TV marketing for new media. People began to notice that I was good to have in brainstorming meetings and handy with a red pen. From film marketing, I went on to specialize in music brand management. Now I'm a new media producer for Rosetta Stone, which means that I work on content curation and creation. Our fans are incredible--and I'm lucky enough to find/make content that keeps them entertained.
I am an IT guy by trade, but it was my life-long love of music that eventually led me here.
Skateboard videos - folk music films - online vignettes
I started off with my own youtube channel, but then I moved onto designing websites, I've taken media at college. |
