EDUCATION

In light of new technologies, do we need to reinvent the school, its methods and objectives?

We are constantly looking at new collaborative software and approaches to working together and across a range of subjects and disciplines.

Yes.

yes the pupils need to be equiped for change and have the skills to adapt to the needs of the 21st century

It s really important schools to go back on the books and decrease the electronic devices, Students have problems with reading and writing, have back problems from sitting in front of the computer all day long. It is good to have a decrease for paperwork but very important to consider students health and post effects from sitting in front of the computer all day long.

I believe that it is important to bring the Internet into the classroom. And to make sure our students are given the opportunity to deepen their knowledge on the subjects that they're most interested in.

I don't have personal experience of teaching at schools but I guess that keeping pace with new technologies is a must in achieving the objectives even there.

If we have the resources, why not? Technology should be used to address needs for students to learn better but not to make it too easy or convenient for them so that laziness won't be bred.

Yes, the school must walk beside the human development.

No. I don't think technology will reinvent the school. I think it should be used to deliver the same information in a different way. Teachers may have to reinvent how they distribute information, but the overall knowledge we try to communicate to students should stay very close to what we know now. The objectives will not change, they will be expanded. It will be difficult for teachers to meet these objectives, not impossible. The learning curve will come for the educators in order to make the delivery of knowledge to students meaningful and relevant.

I don't think we need to reinvent the school, but it is important to understand that technology can be very helpful in helping students grasp some concepts. We have to understand that students learn in different ways and it's important to find out how we can engage all students. The world has become such a technology based place that sometimes the only real way to get students involved is by using technology in the class. I think the objective will stay the same but we now have many avenues to help students learn. It's a very great time for visual learners because we have so many different devices to keep all students interested.

No. It can be a positive for schools to bring in more forms of technology. However this should not be done simply because they feel they should have the best technology or have a "techno lust" for new gadgets. If there are no teachers willing to use the technology than there is no reason to bring it in. Programs such as physical education are taking cuts because 5 new smartboards are purchased and never used. Teachers should be implementing technology but only to a certain extent. No computer is going to increase the significance of WWII studies or long hand mathematics. Ontario has already implemented technology classes such as the I.T. class. It is the teacher's responsibility to integrate technology into their classroom when necessary.

For years the Canadian Government has worked to progress our school system to get to where it is now. Even if we wanted to reinvent school, this option is one that would take many years. What we can do as teachers, rather than reinvent the wheel, is continue to incorporate its current methods and objectives but also incorporate forms of technology to compliment it. As we begin to familiarize ourselves with the various forms of technologies that our progressing in society, we will have the ability to include these technologies in our lessons. Evidently technology is more appropriate in certain subject areas and as a teacher it is my duty to identify where technology will be useful in student learning.

I think that methods are all ready being changed, as more technology is brought into the classroom. I think it is very important for students to have access to different types of technology in school, and to use various technological resources, because realistically this is what their future will be like. I think that there needs to be a emphasis on the dangers of technology, and students should learn how to use technology correctly and safely.

Technology hasn’t changed the subject knowledge that is being taught. It is just a new method of teaching; a vehicle to transmit information and for learning to be more student-centered and -driven. School in general doesn’t need to be reinvented, but the methods and objectives are being changed gradually as needed. As with any change within the school system, it is gradually implemented and it isn’t a drastic reinvention of the entire model. Methods of instruction are changing as teachers gain more knowledge and skills and as teachers become comfortable. The NETS (National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers and Students) have already been established to outline how technology can and should be used in the classroom. I believe that new technology will change the way students learn and the way teachers teach, but I don’t think that it needs to be a forced “reinvention” that is send down from administration. It will be a change brought about by teachers who are passionate about finding new ways to teach, and if it is more effective that previous methods, it will catch on and eventually it will be a new norm for teaching.

Reinvention seems to be somewhat of a strong word, but I believe adaptation is paramount. Considering how we have moved forward technologically in only the past 20 years, the next 20 years will likely provide even more growth at an alarming rate. As such, students should not only be very well acquainted with technology, but they should be taught how to adapt to new technologies. I believe that students today are intrinsically motivated to learn about technology, as it affects so many aspects of their lives, but lack the resources to learn. By providing these resources in a variety of ways, students will be better prepared for success in the coming decades.

Yes. Change with the times.

Yes. Rote memorization is now history, as all knowledge is soon to be at our fingertips. The logic-based ability to search for the information we need is now more essential. I am amazed at how many people do not know how to effectively use Google.
