I would like to be more discerning when I buy clothes or furniture. What do you recommend I do to acquire this ability?

Start studying what quality is. Look at the incredibly high end furniture and couture clothes even if you will never be able to afford that level. It's about training your eye to recognize the difference between high design and low design whether it's for fashion or interiors.

For clothes- really its all about finding what works best for you. If your not sure about trying out a new trend and you are okay with thrift shopping- go to Goodwill! I love picking up trendy pieces there. Because if you think about it, trends really do revolve around in a ten year cycle. Everything comes back around, and luck would have it Goodwill is probably going to have something from a previous era. A better method could be vintage shopping. If the thought of thrifting is daunting, vintage stores are more edited and hand selected for the pieces fit and more up to date quality.

Its really just trial and error if you are out there doing it on your own. You have to try everything on and don't be afraid of giving a new item a chance. If you still aren't sure hire a stylist :)

Take stock of your wardrobe, have a look a the pieces you already own, get rid of anything you never wear (to make room for the new stuff) and then go shopping alone, using what you already own as your foundation. This way you don't buy things that you can't wear with anything else. Every item should have multiple uses and should be able to be worn with lots of things.

Magazines are our books, so by them and study them.
And you could also do a personal image workshop.

I like to think of myself as a new age Nancy Drew. I investigate everything that comes to my mind. So if I have a goal or project I look into it and read up on it as much as I can from that I gain an understanding and can move forward with comfort that I am going to buy something I adore.

I recommend you ask yourself why you like something and be as true to yourself and your tastes, as absolutely possible, just at the same time, when thinking about your clothes, remember that you can like the way something looks but it doesn't mean it looks good on you, just find something else you love that does look good on you.

Make a list what things that you really need. So you have to think first whether it's worth it or not. Because when you buy something, it's just like an investment, so it's very important to make a good choice.

Be selective on what requires a big investment vs. what you can save on. In fashion for example I never cheapen out on shoes and coats! I have really expensive handbags and cheaper ones (depending on the occasion)! I almost never spend a lot of money on my T-shirts and accessories. I have a few "reasonably" priced pairs of jeans, and great finds for dresses (from the discounted designers stores/outlets). Also don't EVER buy a cheap (quality) suit, you can tell the bad fabric/construction immediately and won't stand the test of time!
My philosophy on the matter is: if it can damage/protect your body (like shoes and coats), go with good quality. If I change it often and gets beaten up in the washing machine I go cheap...the rest are hunting finds!!!!
Not everything expensive is great quality...learn your fabrics and construction basics, before you dish out $500 for polyester!
Also go for original pieces instead of the brand everyone carries...for examples no one cares for my Coach handbag, but they all admire my Peter Kent!
Check out outlet stores...there are amazing finds to dress well on a budget!

All you need is a good woman to help.

Google search. Phone a friend. Keep an eye on price tags and if you can, always look for handmade to help out a struggling artist or designer trying to work for themselves. Its very important to help out others who are taking the time and effort to throw themselves into their passions. Check out Etsy.com.

something who show who you are, and at the sametime make you feel good

Well impulse shopping definitely doesn't help. Studying the product for awhile to see its value, staying power and compatibility helps!

know what you are looking for and do abit of research when making the move

I tell all my clients feel comfortable 1st and foremost - the same should go for purchasing clothing and furniture. Look at the product - test it out, are you intimidated by the price? Remember you get what you pay for so spend when it comes to classic items like coats, beds, etc. and for trendier items go inexpensive!

think before you buy, do you erally need it
