What advice would you give to those just beginning?

Whohub

Don't let others dictate what you do, be confident, and don't be afraid to fail. Failures are so much more a part of getting better than successes. Success comes as a reward for perseverance.

Draw or create everyday.
Learn your strength, work on your weakness.
Further your education. There are few great self taught artists. Atleast with a degree you can get a job to support yourself.

School. It's expensive and if your poor your going to have to A:sell your soul to the devil B:join the army (which is the same thing as A) or C:go out there and live your dream and don't look back.Follow your passion, follow your bliss and above all follow your heart.

Don't.Get a proper job.

Learn to work in every medium.

Be part of a community.

It doesn't matter what area of art you choose. Draw, paint, photograph intensely.

Know that your education doesn't end in the classroom.

Understand the importance of being culturally integrated.

Don't get too preoccupied with developing a recognizable style - if you limit yourself in that way it may prevent you from finding your true artistic voice.

Pick a career path that you genuinely enjoy. I have moved around the design world for the best part of a decade to get the job I really wanted.

Draw lots - I still meet designers and illustrators who simply cannot draw.

Keep sketchbooks.

Persist and work hard - you may feel like you are going nowhere but hard work ALWAYS pays off - I guarantee it.

Clearly define what you want to do, then go out and do it. And don't forget to pick up some books on art marketing if you're not a business person. And find a more experienced artist who's willing to answer your questions, or join an artist website that offers some kind of forum or discussion area.

Do what you love to do without thinking of sales so much as thinking about communicating something that is truly meaningful to you that you want to share with others. Take joy in the creativity, not so much in the recognition.

I can't give advise. (I need advise!) but I'll say, don't give up!

Practice, Practice, Practice, !!

First, if there is anything else you could be happily doing other than art - do it. Second, if not, grow a thick skin and learn as much about the business as you can while illustrating your bum off. There's no other way to develop your skills and figure out where your art best fits than to study and work. Expect rejection - lots of it - but also learn to move past it. This is an industry for the truly passionate - it's an obsessive compulsion. If it is anything less to you, you're in the wrong business or you have some growing up to do. (Nothing wrong with that, just be aware you may not be ready yet.)

Stay true to yourself. Be open to suggestion, learn from others but never loose who you are in the process...

I wont, because if I do, they wont even start, they'll just take a 9-5 job and give up and then that one special artist who is meant to be great will have never tried and end up lost.

But I will say this, study the work you think is best, compare your art to other's art that is not as good as your own, then, when you are ready, compare your new art to those you think are masters until you are as good as them, be open to suggestions to improve your work always, but only listen to what makes sense to you.

If you manage to break into a lucrative comics or illustration career.... please come back and tell me what the hell you did.
