HARMONY

How do you distinguish between spirituality and religion?

Whohub

Spirituality is present and spontaneous and arises from each individual. Religion is a doctrine.

How do you distinguish between spirits and ghosts? It is all based on what you think and what you believe not make believe

I think Spirituality is for people who are uncomfortable with humility or recognizing a higher power. I think Religion is for those who have made a real connection to the Higher Power. I think the difference is God (Religion) or no God (Spirituality).

Hmm.. Good one.. Personally, spirituality is just KNOWING that there is a GOD and knowing how to live RIGHT!!! Religion is something TOTALLY different!!!

both are different but connected. Religion is the journey to spirituality.

Spirituality is a purely personal experience. Religion is a consensual reality and a system of beliefs and practices that come to be regarded as a shared world view. I imagine that one can subscribe to a religion without any experience of spirituality whereas the experience of spirituality need not conform to any religion at all.

Spirituality comes with open mind, religion is the fruit of brain washing.

This is a bit of a trick question for me as I am not a fan of most "organized" religions. If I am anything it would be closest to Buddhist as it teaches you philosophically to be a better person.

I define religion as going to a church regularly, tithing, following and obeying the tenets of that religion even if you don't agree necessarily.

I think being spiritual is really just being more open. You don't feel the need to commit to a group or listen to a leader, just do the right thing.

The distinction between spirituality and religion stand at a cross road for most, but for me spirituality is the believe of what is true in your heart and religion will always be about mans gain in the world!

I really do not make a distinction except spirituality is something that can always be with you no matter where you go. Religion tends to be more of a group effort, attending a church or synagogue etc. To be spiritual you only need to have faith, where religion tends to be more of a set practice and regimen.

Religion: impositions: to pray you need to say this prayer learnt with this words forced, go in that place, own those ideals.
Spirituality: no matter where, which time of the day is, which words you use, which is your work, stop and talk with your spiritual being.

" Spirituality found through love puts completeness and meaning in each moment and gives you a moral compass leading to goodness and truth! " ~ Larry O. Blevins ~

My loving makes me believe that there is an infinity of knowing yet to know!

Religion comes from the Latin word meaning "to bind". Religions are codes of conduct or moral laws which many seek to follow and keep in order to sense the pleasure of God or personal satisfaction. I do not believe that religion can deliver these things ultimately.
The message of Jesus was one of death to self, self-righteous and personal ability to 'work your way to happiness'. Instead the good news Jesus offered was simply to accept and receive God's free gift of grace - forgiveness of our sins, freedom to start again at any time, deliverance from condemnation, power to overcome... all based His death and resurrection. Nothing less.

Religion is organized superstition. Spirituality is personal superstition. You can (and should) have empathy for other living beings without thinking the clouds are talking to you.

I have already answered this, but to expand a little, I think the challenge with religion, and a deity which asks to be worshipped, as opposed to honoured, is that this disempowers us, and is controlling. Humans do like to be part of a community, but if this discourages individuality and freedom of thought we are, again, not in balance with our unique essence, which allows us to have the most fulfilling and joyful existence.

Religions are external, formal structures. Spirituality is sacred connection from within.
