What do you expect from your supervisor? What qualities would you like to have in your principal?

Whohub

I expect suport and a help if necessary. My principal must be above all understanding.

I expect my supervisor to be a mentor in my professional quest. They should be willing to pass on knowledge, but at the same time they should willing to learn from the team they lead. Flexibility is an important quality for a good supervisor. A good supervisor should also be personable, but not insincere in their praise. I would also like to know that the person I am working for has interests outside their school duties. This is key to keeping them focused when on task and keeping them positive while at school because they have an outlet for their frustrations when they leave school.

Principals have important roles in schools. A good principal is caring, approachable, accepting and a good role model for the students. They are always there to help the students when needed, are good listeners, are effective in solving problems and they respect the staff of teachers.

I expect an open and respectful relationship. The willingness to listen to my opinions and ideas and allow for every teachers personal preference in regards to teaching. Not all students learn the same way, therefore different teaching philosophies should be allowed. I would also like to receive different teaching ideas from the principal since in most situations they have a vast knowledge of teaching built off their own experiences. A principal should also be someone who is willing to take part in extra-curricular activities when possible. They should be seen in the hallways promoting their views in a pleasant manner. No student within the school should feel threatened by them. It is a mutual respect so both teacher and principal can learn from one another.

I expect my supervisor to have my back. I expect them to support me, and be able to trust that I will do a good job, and give me the benefit of the doubt should an issue arise. I would like my principal to be genuinely interested in what is going on in my classroom, and with my students. I would love to have an open door policy where is was not a rare site to see the principal in my classroom.

I would like my principal to work as a partner. In many ways, the principal/teacher relationship is similar to the teacher/student relationship. If guided freedom is given to the teacher by the principal, it gives him/her the opportunity to thrive and teach creatively. Most importantly, I believe the principal should provide regular feedback for the teacher, letting them know where they can improve and where they are succeeding, while also providing suggestions as to how to improve as well. I would like to gain a level of trust from the principal in order to have control of my classroom, but I would also like to know that the administration staff is ready to support my students and I.

As an future teacher there are several qualities I value in a supervisior that I feel best suit my vision of a employee-employer partnership.

My ideal principal will have the following qualities:
-a shared vision for learning and education
- high expectations for self and staff
- fair judgement
- compassion and understanding for all staff and students
- great people management skills
- reliable leadership skills
- ability to provide constructive criticism and encouragement in order to effectively guide the professional development of staff members
- a desire to help staff advance in there career goals
- trust and respect for staff members as professionals

I am the Program Manager for our programs. I work closely with my teachers, when I am not teaching myself. We work together. If issues arise we work on the solutions. We are a team and everything we do is for the students.

The greatest school administration is the one that trusts and supports its teachers as professionals and, as long as students' results are good, does not try to micro-manage their methodology and practice.
