What cooperative learning means to you. How have you used it?

Did practice of it in my early days when I was a very young teacher but now I don't need it any more as I have completed 21 years of teaching career.

Your students are also teaching in the process. There are countless of things that they have discovered that you also need to know.

It's essencial! Smart students sometimes have to sit together with other students to help them in conversation and writing exercises.

Students can be the best teacher and in my opinion group work is important for learning. Having students work in groups is beneficial for them since they are a similar level, some might be able to break down the tasks and see it in a different way. Cooperative learning also helps the students with their social skills and ability to work with others.

To me, cooperative learning is one where knowledge is shared and learning is organic. Strategies are used in the classroom to have students learn from each other. The teacher's perspective should only be one of many in classroom. Group work should be encouraged. Student-led learning stations should be utilized. Jig-saw style activities where groups share with other what they are learning. The above are all effective cooperative learning techniques that I've used in my classrooms thus far.

Cooperative learning is a wonderful teaching tool. It is obvious that monitorial schooling is a practice of the past. Having students working together to achieve a goal is far better than individual work. We can not eliminate individual work because it is our best form of assessment and will always be included in the school system. But brainstorming with others opens students eyes to what they may have otherwise not seen. Also, group work mimics for most what they will eventually have to take part in later in life. By basing a lot of your evaluation on group work such as projects promotes academics as well as social and living skills.

Cooperative learning is crucial to a balanced education. I really believe in learning from others in the classroom, because everyone has a different perspective, and it is often different from your own. I have used cooperative learning by having a lot of group sharing, and giving students plenty of opportunities to discuss and debate issues with their peers.

Cooperative learning can take place between teachers and teachers, teachers and students, and students and other students. Cooperative learning can take place in using each person’s strengths to contribute to the learning of the group. This will provide different perspectives on one topic, facilitating rich discussion and giving new insight. In the classroom, cooperative learning occurs daily to ensure students make the most of the learning opportunity.

Cooperative learning to me involves small, heterogeneous teams, with five people, working together towards a group task. Within this process each group member is individually accountable for part of an outcome that cannot be completed unless the members work together. I like the collective responsibility in cooperative learning which is why I have implemented it into my lesson plans, and teaching philosophy. Cooperative learning provides students with the opportunity to work on their interpersonal skills. I think that the teacher's role is to facilitate and increase students' independence by providing students with skills to apply to their everyday life. Children gain more knowledge and understanding by interacting with their peers. Within the junior and intermediate division we know that students give authority to peer groups, and value their opinions. Cooperative learning allows students to collaborate with others to have a finished product that highlights the need for everybody in the group to be an equal contributor in order to succeed. I believe that cooperative learning is an important component of how I teach.

Our teaching is in small groups. We encourage the students to work together and help one another if someone is struggling.

It's the only way to learn I think
