What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career?
All of them very important
They have done the part that I don't enjoy dealing with.
They represent the business side of art. They are necessary for making sales which
make my living. They have nothing to do with what I paint or how I paint. I have
been fortunate in that most of my dealers have been loyal and faithful fans with integrity.
Those who were not -- no longer represent me.
I used to work in this capacity, and I know the importance these people can have for an artist -- they take care of representation and promotion so the artist can make work. These are incredibly important roles, and if I didn't have organizations devoted to making sure artists have opportunities to show, I probably would not have had any work seen at all, except on the internet.

Gallery owners have played a large role in my career, but none of the other above roles. Without galleries, I wouldn't have sold much art, but I've had to do most of the leg work to getting my work seen and out. Showing in college and universities settings has happened by having work seen in museum competitions shows, so I never know how one thing will lead to another.
Currently I'm an artist resigning at Gallery Geukens & De Vil, Antwerp, Belgium.

They made huge profits, and are a must for Artists who have no commercial sense.

My relationships with gallery owners and dealers are very positive, with feedback flowing both ways. I prefer to deal directly with the galleries and my investors; representatives and intermediaries work for many people but I have not found them essential to my success to date.
They for me have not influenced nothing in my career as I dont see my creative side a profession for life.
I think before I sold on line, more so. I did galleries, art sellers etc. and it was somewhat helpful. I would think with an artists with a larger following that it would be very helpful if they were not overexposed. I would like to show my work in local galleries at some point again. |
