What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career?

Whohub

a passive role.

None. I wish they did.

At this point very minor.

Very little, probably to my own detriment, but they tend to be unpleasant to have business with, so I've done my level best to avoid them...

I believe marketing is key, I know many remarkably talented artists who never sell and many mediocre artists who can't produce enough to meet the demand. The difference I see is marketing.
Until recently I tried to stay out of galleries, but dealers, gallery owners, etc can and do often provide a much needed service. A good gallery will not only provide a physical space for your art but will actively market you and your works

They all have a place at one time or another in an artists' career. For the most part, I have found their influence to be positive and uplifting.

I have welcomed all reps. I paint; they represent.

In general, the art community is at best indifferent to my work. Many are hostile to my views, even though they will concede that it is good. In a community that prides itself on open-mindedness and diversity, I am a pariah for my views. Political conservatism is unwelcome in my experiences.

From 1978 to 1997 I relied on them, greatly.
I find them to be rude and critical now, and charging too much to treat artists as lost children. I do not participate.

None, I have no requirement for them.

they are sales men , do what I cannot do .

I have only dealt with gallery owners. They gave me important objective guidance and helped me along the way. I landed some teaching jobs because of many of the connections they had as well.

I have nothing to do with them.

'art dealers' are not part of my vocabulary...
a few galleries and museums that have been involved either directly in commissioning works, like whitney museum, serpentine gallery, walsall museum and art gallery, city art gallery, natural history museum, science museum, v&a and cartwright hall. the works have been largely video based other than some some sculptural and installation based works.

They have played the role of streamlining the marketing of my artwork as well as purchase of raw material. They have also given me ideas and suggestions on how to satisfy the customer better.
