In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is?
Again, I think it's all about jumping in and getting wet. Often you have NO clue what the next step should be, so you just take your best guess and learn from the resulting success or failure.
Sometimes you don't. Sometimes you just have to work it out. Sometimes it just comes to you.
I follow a basic procedure. Preliminary sketch, prime canvas, paint background, and proceed to the foreground. However, I stay flexible because some paintings seem to "come through" very quickly and "paint themselves".
I have learned to listen to my inner voice. I work on what calls me in the present moment. It is desire, intuition; an emotional, or "gut" response.
Your imagination is solving problems.
Until it feels right for you.
The next step is completely intuitive. Keep in mind you should always challenge yourself as an artist (as I said before). The next step may very well take you out of your comfort zone, but it's necessary in order to grow as an artist. Don't fear it, just move forward. And don't pay any attention to what others are doing. Jumping on a bandwagon is rarely a good idea.
First you draw on all you have learned and then surrender to the process. Surrender is key to transcendent art.

The next step is the one that takes you past the one you just did. It should be a natural progression or if you have been "stuck" doing one thing, you should know to move on, to grow, to go to the next step.
i don't think you know what the next step is - it just happens. art isn't forced ... well it shouldn't be, anyway.
I never have an idea what the next step is. I just look at it and think, "Huh... That would look good!" MOst times it does, some times it doesn't, and I always learn that THAT is how to do it next time.
The next step is determined by how it will interact with the last step.
