|In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is?
To try something different.
Sometimes I guess. Other times there is just a process you go through and there are steps to follow in that process.
Instinct and experience
As a prolific artist, you know when you need to take steps. Most of these should be natural, but you just know when you need to step it up to avoid falling into a rut or being repetitive. My basic rule of thumb was coined by artist Peter Wonsowski: "onwards and upwards." Push, push, push myself everyday to do something that pushes my art/thinking or pushes my artistic presence by marketing/promotion.
Paying the bills guides me.
Wherever your foot is, the next one should go in front of that somewhere.
Each problem comes from the last solution.
Experimentation is key.
No, there is no literal guide. I do, nonetheless believe that there is an abstract guide that the artist creates through the knowledge and insight gained by working and reworking each new piece of art... learning from the one before...
I suppose that is how I would know what the next step is... by the work of art before and the work of art before that...
You take it. Then it quickly becomes apparent if it was the right next step or the wrong one.
You just have to realize that what you're doing right now is the best you can do, and that each step in your creative journey is based on the previous one. I ask myself questions. "What is working?" "What can I improve on in my next project?"
In art, as in love, follow your heart but be informed by your intelect.
I guess you didn't get the memo?
You don't .Thank god. That's the whole point of art,to surprise.
You feel it. You take a step back from the art and feel what it needs, what direction it's going in, etc.
