Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought?

Depends on the Artist and the Work Within the Climate.

I don't like saying that the artist is bought. That is not true at all. The buyer is purchasing a creation of the artist, they are not taking the artist themselves home with them. They are taking something of that artist's life with them, to remember them and to cherish them.

A work of art is purchased and not its artist. The artist offers a piece of his inspiration/passion to others which is something very special. But the artist doesn't offer himself nor his soul or body. It is something he gives and those who appreciate it will take it with gratitude.

Both I feel. There is definitely a little of the artist in each painting he/she does.
That is why rejection is so hard on our psyches.

Do you sign a contract making you exclusive to a gallery, where anything you create becomes intellectual property of somebody else? Are you being adequately compensated for your efforts? You must decide this. Like Google, I think information should be free to the world, and that includes art. Usually the art is purchased and not the artist.

You buy the artist, period.

The work of art is purchased with just a little bit of the artist stays in that work.

A work of art is always purchased I never feel bought I am sending my message out into the world. What is the point of keeping them all to myself in my studio, I enjoy seeing them out in the world up on peoples walls.

WOW. GOOD QUESTION...I LIKE THE 2ND ONE BETTER. THE ARTIST IS BOUGHT MOST DEFINITELY

art is an extension of an artists soul...souls are priceless.

I sell my artwork. I do not feel bought-- that thought never occurred to me.

No. No one can buy what is in me. They only have but the inspiration created.

It depends on what level the artist is in. Sometimes one sometime the other.

I think the art is purchased not the artist.

I guess it depends on who is buying it. Some buy for the artists name, but some buy because they love the art itself. Who's the wiser? I think the one who buys it because they love it.
