Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought?
The artist who is bought gets bought way before the piece is sold.
Selling a piece does not mean the artist is bought, the buyer might actually understand what s/he is doing, the seller may still retain their integrity.
As I think further about this it is worth pointing out that the final piece, if it is a material thing, is merely an artifact from the journey of the maker. Once again, proportional to the grip of the should police, the piece is a finger pointing at something larger. It actually takes longer than ten seconds to find the living energy layered in the symbol.
Most go shopping.
It depends on who's doing the purchasing. Some collectors will purchase a work of art because of who the artist is. Other's purchase artwork because they love the piece. Personally, I would buy a piece of art because it touched me.
Art is purchased. Nobody buys or sells me.

I think it depends entirely on the artist and the artwork. If you put alot of yourself into it then it does sometimes feel as if the buyer is taking away a little bit of yourself.

It can be both. A work of art is a thing that can be bought, but since that work is essentially a part of the artist it can also be said that the artist has been bought.
I think that some artist you can bought by making them to do what you told them to do and pay for it, but it may kill the talent in the artist. Artist need his or hers freedom. If the artist is free and you bought his or hers art, you bought the art with a message of an artist. It can be also emotional message. And I guess you may bought also a part of the artist... If I know someone who I have something against, who is going to buy my work, I want to stop it happen. The work is part of me and I might not want it to be part of someones life who I don`t like at all. Then it doesn`t matter if I don`t know about it. But it`s like a bretayer when and if I find out. I`m a human and I have feelings. I think everyone has someone or some place that they don`t want to be connected by other people. It`s like ruin your own reputation.
Whenever I am looking carefully at a work of art and I’m in a concentrated state of mind, I feel like someone is talking to me. I can sense things about the person behind it. I don’t hear words, but I get feelings from the work that tell me who is behind it, at least with contemporary art. I don’t mean simply understanding the ideas in the press release or the artist’s statement, but sensing an individual with strengths, weaknesses, wisdom, ignorance, and so on. This isn’t limited to the art found in galleries, I can feel it in the street or anywhere else art shows up. The best work gives me a strong feeling of an individual behind it, so in that sense if I bought the work then I’d be buying the artist too. In one way all galleries are created equal because they all have art loaded with individuals.
Art is simply the artifact of the artistic experience so it is that which is purchased although it does seem that people sometimes feel as if they want a piece of the artist.

In the publishing world (copyright sales) an Artist is bought in my eyes,but for a sale of original artwork to a person who loves it,its a purchase.
it is the work. when you say the artist who is bought, it sounds like the artist has no control over what he wanted to do...like he is dictated by the buyer in what he is supposed to do. |
