Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought?
Both can be true but unfortunately quite a lot of purchases are based on the name attached to the work, for the sake of keeping up with fashion or a perceived investment value.
I think it's the artist who must be bought. To understand a paintings true nature, one must look at the individual who has created it. It may be pleasing to you, but only true art can inspire other creatives to create. They are the foundation to movements which are often incomprehensible until years after they've begun. If you want to buy into the same every day thing, you're not an artist.
Art is purchased.
If you buy my work I'm happy. If you ask me to draw your little Foo Foo baby substitute handbag dog and I do it, then my soul is doomed.
Well, this is a question of perspectives, isn't it?
Is a quart of milk purchased, or is it better said that it is the cow who is bought?
Feh. Get over it. Solution is to not sell your work.
Enough of your existential claptrap!
I think if anything it's a snapshot of who the artist was when they did the piece. Depending on the artist, it might be consistent 50 years later or it might be unrecognizable in a month.
Artists who think so take themselves far too seriously.
Both.
We all have to eat. The artist who is all about the art and dies of starvation is not helping any one. And when the body starts to rot with all the flies and oil paint. Nasty!
A work of art is purchased.
In the film "The Agony and the Ecstacy" starring Charleton Heston who plays Michaelangelo, the actor playing Raphael has a line: "we are like harlots peddling beauty at the doorsteps of the mighty." Read whatever you want into that.
Let it go.
I don't think that the artist is bought with the art piece. A moment in time of the artist is bought. Once I have finished a piece of work, whatever needed to be processed has been, and the object is now a by product. |
