What is your personal position on the use of animals in scientific investigation?
A couple of years ago, a group from University of Padova together with other research centers, discovered the molecular mechanisms of Ulrich's Muscolar Dystrophy (UMD) using an animal (mouse) model. UMD is a severe congenital muscle disease which derives from mutations involving the colagene COL A6 gene.
The kids born with these mutations hardly ever manage to walk or get to walk for a short period of time, after which their skeletal muscles get so weak and degenerated that they spend the rest of their short lives nailed down to a wheelchair. The perspective of life with this disease is around 12 years of age.
The work of this and other groups brought to a possible treatment of this disease by an orally supplied drug. Yes, it means a life long treatment, a pill to take on daily bases. But such treatment allows their muscles to recover, to the point to be able to walk again - or maybe for the first time - and live beyond those 12 short years.
Ask to all the parents of those children what they think about use of animals in scientific investigations: would they trade the life of those mice which were sacrificed for these discoveries, for a chance of giving a possible cure and a better life quality to their children.   | | |
We do not believe either in the use of animals for scientific investigation
If animals themselves are needed to understand their behavior, life cycle, diseases, etc, that's fine, but please do not inoculate an animal with a toxic substance that we know is toxic just to see what happens to it.
We should study animals for the sake of the animal itself - we will learn a tremendous amount.
I think non-humans also deserve respect. There should be better laws to prevent scientists from taking abusive practices into their labs. I believe humans and non-humans should be treated symmetrically when it comes to respecting one rights in scientific research.
Its OK if there is no unnecessary suffering.
If its possible without them being harmed!
