Absolutely...more so than sports or other pastimes that we've begun to worship, as a society, in my humble opinion. We have shifted our values from intellectual pursuits to mindless entertainment. Our culture needs MORE art--so we can flex our mind muscles and begin to question and answer again. Art is a good avenue to these communication pathways...it forces a person to look at things in different ways, through different eyes. It helps people to understand each other better, or at least see a varying point of view.
For me, art is as necessary as breath. Art is something that moves us outside of our comfort zone sometimes and then at other times is a comfort. This ability to touch a human's heart or mind outside of everyday life and experience is vital to humanity's well-being.
I believe it is in human society, yes. Since the dawn of civilisation, people have had such a strong desire to create and enjoy art, and to recreate the world around us through it, it can't possibly be useless. It's been scientifically proven that music (a form of art) can be calming and theraputic, and even improve mental performance. I think that can be said of all art, not only for the artist, but the artist's audience. The fact we can make it and enjoy it so is a blessing to our species and one of the plus points of being human.

I know all sorts of people from all sorts of backgrounds and ages who all manifest a benefit from their experiences of art. So yes it is necessary. It is our most basic and natural and most profound form of human communication.
