Is art necessary?
Of course!
I feel that art is necessary because it allows us to be human, and express what we're feeling and show others what we see. It helps us to record past events and periods in history through the eyes of a human for the future to see. It also is a good way for people to communicate their thoughts and feelings when they can't just express it in words. And for many people, that is true: due to a disability, people might not be able to write down or say what they feel or think, but can give others a visual representation of what they feel or think. That is often true for me, since my Asperger's often gets in the way of my verbal communication skills, I have used art to express feelings and thoughts without the limitations of words. It has helped me reach people on a more personal level, a level that causes them to see the situation from my point of view as well, resulting in almost instant empathy.
Art is essential to life. There is more than just the physical aspect but it is also highly emotional. There needs to be more appreciation of the arts because people do not realize how much of yourself as an artist you have to put into your work. Art is life changing.

Absolutely! Art helps people get in touch with their emotions, to express themselves and to find beauty in the world and around them. It can be used to educate people, tell a story, record history or celebrate a memory.
For many young children their first attempts at communication are done through art. Granted it isn't the art of museums but it is art to a parent and it has brought tears to more than one mom or dad. And, probably to even more grandparents who live to far away to hold a small grandchild that first attempt at art has been a form of bonding.
Art has been used to break through to patients who for what ever reason couldn't speak or wouldn't. It has helped survivors of child sexual abuse and other trauma survivors. Art isn't just a thing of beauty, there is art that isn't even close to being beautiful but it is very necessary to our daily lives and this would be a sad place without it.
For the existence of human life? no. For a greater understanding of humanity? yes.

In the basic scheme of life, probably not in the same way as food and water. But historically it's been an aid to communicate ideas and therefore assisted the human race to develop culturally.
It's the highest totem of human existence!
Extremely necessary - if not for the arts we'd still be living in caves instead of elaborately built spaces, we'd be dressed in rotting scraps of carcass - even the images and attributes of the gods many people worship are informed by the influence of art.
Our every interaction with the world both outside and inside of us is formed by art: who would ever know how to enjoy the view of a sunset if Claude hadn't first painted it for all to see?
How would we behold Venice if J. M. W. Turner hadn't painted his venerated series of watercolours depicting the sinking city?
And how would we be able to enjoy the beauty of 16bit imagery that had been right there in front of our eyes for years if not for the works of eBoy and other similar artists?
Whether one is aware of the impact or not the Arts are essential to our collective as well as our private lives: it shapes our understanding of the world surrounding us and gives true enjoyment and depth to our every experience.
Oh Lord, yes, I think so. A world without art might function, but it would be colorless and joyless. |
