How should a work of art be evaluated?
Well I don't think you can group "all works of art." However I do believe each work should be interesting or eye catching, send a message and evoke some sort of emotion.
I believe that different styles and media should be evaluated based upon separate characteristics. However, there are some criteria that can generally be applied to all art, including: quality of craftsmanship, visible knowledge/understanding of medium, and ability to provoke emotion or thought.
A work of art should definitely be judged within the limitations and difficulties of its own medium. You cannot look at an attempt at a 14 inch pinchpot and say "that's bad" or "that's good" without knowing the kind of effort involved in making a 14 inch pinchpot in the first place.
Artwork should be evaluated with an open mind and without assumptions. Let the work speak for itself.
I believe art should be evaluated on all of the aspects it takes to create the piece. The thought process, the preparation, the work itself, and the finished project.
Honestly, that depends on the viewer. Everyone sees something differently. So, how they evaluate and see it for themselves is their choice.
The first reaction is the most important. Visually, the design elements are the first noticed and thusly helps the viewer create an opinion on the piece within the very first few seconds. If the design elements work together successfully, then the piece needs to relate to the content behind the work. If both of these can be done, and are without question, then I feel the work is executed properly.
The value is in the eye and the knowledge of the observer.
From your personal experience, just like everything else, which is undoubtedly informed by a mixture of subjective analysis heavily colored by your cultural context and refined to the degree of diversity of perspective you have encountered and reflected upon.
Based only on is it creative does it express the artist.
If it moves you in any way, it is deserving of your considerations. |
