How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?

Whohub

If the idea moves me. If it's saying something new or something old in a different way. If it communicates my message without making the viewer too comfortable. Making it unable for them to 'get it' within the first 5 seconds.

If I can envision it finished and it's beautiful, I do it.

I take a step back and look at it objectively. If it is something that I can pick apart, then it usually means it was not that good. However, I am very critical of my own work, so I try to get as many opinions on the idea.

I'm interested in the process of painting, how the paint reacts to the surface. I find it meditative and am able to let the materials and mediums determine the outcome. The idea is always good, however my reaction to the finished piece may differ.

Whether it'll work is dependant on many things, such as composition, suitability as subject-matter, colour and light source. I'll put on my "square eyes" and see if what I'm thinking about is going to work as a picture.

To determine if an idea is good or not I often rely on my visceral response to an idea or an image. Sometimes, I won't recognize it as a bad idea until I've tried it, the evaluate it. At that point I usually know if it is not working or not. Occasionally I won't recognize that the idea didn't work until the painting is done and I've lived with it for a while.

meaning.

you know in your heart......

Simply by my instinctive feelings, with perhaps a bit of logical thinking thrown in.

I don't i just put it out there.

If I like it, I will go with it. I also have a great children's illustration critique group that pushes me beyond where I would go on my own.

same way i evaluate whether any decision is good or not...

seeing how my heart feels, and if there is an uneasy feeling in my tummy I know its not a good idea

I base it on my effort in doing something different.

When I start to try it out, if it comes together smoothly, if it continues to make sense as I am making or as I am writing, its a good idea.....if its not a good idea it feels like I'm pushing a river.

To me there are no bad ideas only sometimes the idea is premature and not ready yet to be exposed on canvas.
