How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?
If my body forces me to complete it.
If it stands up to time and prevails.
I think about it, work it out in my head or on paper, or I just do it and see what happens.
Personal choice.
when you see the results of it, you can judge then ~
When a painting is finished, then I decide if it is any good or not.
Whether or not you can pull it off and Whether it looks compelling or not.
By editing - pick it apart, put it back together again. put it down. Come back to it. what does it do/say/make you feel? if it gets through this - even with substantive changes, it's probably worth doing.
Does it invoke in me a state of Aesthetic Arrest.
I don't. If I like it, it's good. If not, it trashed.
Through trial and error and by exposing it to others for evaluation.
I usually sketch a pencil drawing and leave it around my studio for a few days to a week. If after a period of time I still feel moved and excited about the idea, I put it in the "to be done" list.
if i dont like what im drawing then ill think of something else
Be a life-long student. Learn from everyone and everything. In regards to the art of others: What do you like about it? What doesn't work. Apply this knowledge to your art.
Then create.
Now step away from the canvas. Put the pen down. Fingers off the keyboard. Let it simmer, this melding pot of prose and light. Let it be mallable; changeable from the drastic right down to the sublime. Get some opinions. Remodel. Remold. Step away. Then let it be.
If you believe you can do something- than you generally can. If you believe that something is beyond you- then you are probably right again. |
