How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
Ideas, for me, come from life. I get excited about the way light looks on forms, what shadows it makes. Interesting perspectives are exciting as well.
I've come around to the idea that waiting around for inspiration to fall from the heavens can be a great waist of time (not that it doesn't happen from time to time) . Working at 'it' is the key for me, even if you need to trick yourself into it re cleaning the studio and finding half finished work collecting dust that spark a reaction or , priming some canvas ,ordering paints etc. I like to scour markets for objects that 'speak to me', also 'found objects' with past lives can give birth to ideas.
I am inspired both by internal and external factors. Internally usually its my own emotional state, for example my relationships. I love my partner very much and she inspires me in a big way. Externally, I will see an unusual shape or line in an everyday item and there will be the beginnings from which something new will grow.
For paintings, my inspiration comes from within.
In photography, when I am outdoors, I just know what to shoot with camera.
Honestly I have grown up playing video games and watching animation, so I have always been into more boy-ish things; I dunno why. So nostalgia for the 80's is a lot of what drives me as to what project I will do next. Also aside from using characters I am attatched to, I will often use characters or screen shots that are just really funny looking (i.e. my Mike Tyson from Punch Out portrait).
I cannot really tell. But in most cases for me, if anyone will just ask me how & what, everything just pop-up to my mind.. without even giving me a chance to think for a minute of time.
An idea is born from constant thought. I think about what I do randomly and consistently. Sometimes I literally close my eyes and wait for the show. There is always a show inside my brain waiting to be seen. The colors emerge and I remember them, for later, when they will seemingly "be born." And many ideas simply come from making things and having them fail, making things, having them succeed.
Gestation comes quickly or slowly. Sometimes the meal is fast - other times years to finally emerge. I am inspired at every turn - colours- ideas- feelings - merge, coalesce.

I get inspiration from things I see in everyday life like from a story I read to a picture in a magazine to how I am feeling at the moment.
They come from everything, all the time. Mostly it takes the form of words because images are more difficult to make notes about.
Of course a lot of it takes on darker themes but this is the stuff of entertainment, isn't it?
Mostly music, nature, discussions, movies, tv-shows and books. In other words, other creative works and the world itself.
An idea that is born randomly is sometimes the best of idea. But no idea is bad, some are just better than others. Its like life there is always someone better than you, and someone below you that's why we shouldn't forget to look up and down, not only up because if we only look up we will lose track of the where we are standing and we never should forget who we are, where we stand, who helped us, where we come from and where we are heading.
Life is inspiration for me. My family life growing up, things around me that I care about. I take walks in the mornings and I let my mind flow. A lot of ideas come to me then. |
