Interview with:

Eoin McKeown [eoinymac]

DESIGN
What is your specialty?
Illustration, Cartoons, Character Design, Graphic Design, Flash Animation
Where can we view your portfolio online?
http://www.eoinymac.com and my blog: http://idledoodle.blogspot.com/
What made you interested in design?
I've always been creative so it was a natural progression.
What is your motivation? What makes you get up in the mornings?
The knowledge that by the end of the day I'll have created something new.
How would you define your design style?
Illustrative, humorous, original
How do you promote and move your work?
Word of mouth, the too infrequent mail shots and maintaining an on line presence.
In which new areas would you like to experiment?
I would love to find time to experiment with sculpture and do some more painting. Particularly transferring my pen and ink abstract doodles to large canvas.
Shapes, color, concept: where do you usually begin when conceiving a design?
I always start with my sketchbook and pencil. The conceptual stage is always my favourite, I love to quickly generate ideas on paper and I often find it hard to stop!
Which festivals or awards in your field do you find most interesting?
I love on line illustration and design competitions but it's hard to allocate the time to them that I'd like to.
What is your favourite type of customer?
Honest, doesn't beat around the bush and a good sense of humour!
To a certain point, is copying justifiable?
I can't think of anywhere that copying could be justifiably applied. It's alright to get inspiration from the work of other Artists and it's important to keep up to date with what's happening in your field but directly copying someone else's work definitely isn't acceptable.
List some things you dislike seeing in design.

Do you believe the newer generations are better at designing?
Absolutely not.
With which type of client would you decline in working for?
"I don't have much of a budget for this but there would be a lot of work going forward...."
How do you calculate budgets for a design project?
Depending on the type and size of project I calculate the rate per hour or per day.
Which professionals in your field -contemporary or past- do you most admire?
Ralph Steadman, Gary Larson, Ronald Searle, W. Heath Robinson, Leonardo DaVinci
Which software applications do you most utilize in your work?
Flash CS3 and Photoshop CS2
If you weren't a designer, what would you be doing?
Wildlife photographer
At this moment, what would be your dream job or project?
I'd love to have the financial wherewithal to drop everything and finish writing and illustrating a children's book I've been developing for ages!
Can you see yourself in this field twenty years from now?
I'll be at this until they prise the pencil from my cold dead hand! (Hopefully a bit more than twenty years!)
