Erik Reeves [erikreevesart]
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
I am a Comic Artist and a Conceptual Artist meaning i draw comics and i also do design work for video games and film as well.
Your biography in four lines.
Graduated from High School with dreams of becoming an Artist.
I decided to go to Art School where I met some of the best friends that I still have today!
Hard work and dedication pays off.
Now i work from home and love being creative everyday!
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
Yes i usually post my work on DeviantArt
and on my art blog
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
Im usually inspired by words...for example Magic Rub to me starts my mind wondering about about Magic and then i begin to imagine the entire world that this magic would exist in and then i would look for more words to develop the characters that inhabit this world like Nokia the phone company title i would just drop the "a" and Noki is born and so on. Then i look at lots of pictures to bring the visual together. Thats crazy but its how it starts for me.
What role does technology play in your creative process?
I learned to use Photoshop several years back while working in the Gaming industry and never looked back. I use Photoshop more and more these days but i started really using it for coloring my artwork while using my wacom tablet that was given to me by a good friend a while back to draw digitally.
It truly is the way to go and it saves money on ink, markers and paint and its very good for our environment too!
What is art?
Art to me is anything creative that pleases the senses and allows you to escape your real life.
When do you get your best ideas?
Between the hours of 9pm to 3am usually when family is asleep.
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist?
I began to see myself as an Artist after i accepted what i believed what my purpose in life was. I have been drawing since i was a very small child and one day it just clicked. I believe every person in the world at some point decides what they are for example if i decided tomorrow to be a Photographer then in the morning i am a Photographer and no one can tell me different, i would have to work hard to become a great Photographer but i would take pictures and study the world of Photography until everyone around me agreed that i was a Photographer.
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work?
The list of Artists that have influenced me is very long and since I look for inspiration in so many industries they may work in Video games, Photography, Comics or Animation.
I look at the work of many artists and take inspiration from the way the artist creates the work more than the final piece, to me that is the soul of the artwork.
What types of jobs do you usually do?
Comics, Character designing, Logo designing, and developing ideas from scratch.
My clients range from Independent to Large Companies but I have a descent body of work so available so they usually know what I can do and that usually determines the work that is requested from me.
What advice would you give to those just beginning?
Decide today if this is really what you want to do and if it is know that this has to be what you want to do for the rest of your life. Take your time and learn everything you can about your craft because you have the rest of your life to do it. Ask every Artist you can for advice but never take that advice for granted, knowledge is power even in the Art industry and most Artists have had to work at something for many years and if they are giving you tips for free that took them years to learn consider that gold!
Hard work pays.
