ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
I am a mixed media artist with heavy emphasis on painting and illustration; I also make sculptural interpretations of my flat work when I can. I define myself as an artist through my need to constantly make art in order to try and reason everything I see and hear. I don’t really think I understand the world but when I make art I am able to at least get some kind of grip on it.
What is your message?
Hmm…I would say that’s up to the viewer to decide. I know that sounds like a ‘cop-out’ but I don’t feel like I have much of a message when I make something. I just make things I want to see and sometimes they manifest a message on their own but I’m sure it’s a pretty different message depending on who is looking at the work. When I look at some of my older work I can see a consistency of inspiration but the message in the piece(s) often changes.
Your biography in four lines.
Born. Freaking out, making art. More Freaking out, more art. Die.
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
Yes. http://friendlydamage.blogspot.com http://ethanjamison.jalbum.net
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
Well… Often times I see something that I thought was something else, my mistake for what I thought it was can often turn into an idea for work Inspiration to me is really anything and everything. It’s just a feeling you get when looking at whatever it is you find or think you have a connection to. On the flip side it can also be the complete opposite feeling, this to me is inspiration of what not be or do.
What role does technology play in your creative process?
Technology as a part of my creative process is ever growing. Eight years ago it was a very minimal part; now I could not even image what my work would look like without technology. It's so much a part of everyone’s daily lives now that its role in art is almost indefinable and unavoidable as a part of the creative process.
What is art?
Yikes! Unanswerable question.
When do you get your best ideas?
When I am not paying attention to them.
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?
I don't, that's the shitty part you really can't, you'll never make anything.
Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created?
The internet. Theory of relativity. The wheel.
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist?
When I started to fail in school because I always sat next to a window.
Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities?
Because no one can understand what the fuck there mumbling about…and its annoying to be asked “what?” like seven time.
Do you consider yourself postmodern?
yes!
How should a work of art be evaluated?
Smell it... then close your eyes and slap yourself in the face, open your eyes and then see what happens.
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday?
no
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work?
To many people to name, there energy is influential
What do you think about public funding for the arts?
Can I get some! I think its great, whats not to love about free money.
Is art necessary?
no.
Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold?
no.
Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought?
This is a dumb question...
In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is?
you don't...you gotta wait till you feel it again or just keep making till it comes to a head.
How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased?
these pieces are worth more money and more 'rare' there for musiums will get more people to come see what 100 millions dollars will buy you. That in itself is worth paying $18 at MOMA to go see.
What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career?
not much...
What types of jobs do you usually do?
photo tech.
Which of your jobs or tasks do you most enjoy?
eating.
Do you personally collect any items?
yeah, but is all over the place.
Which websites do you frequently visit?
www.google.com
What advice would you give to those just beginning?
No one gives two shits or a fuck about you or your work, if your okay with that then go for it.
