What is your specialty in multimedia?
Mostly radio: producer and host of weekly radio programming for NPR, podcasts, and music streams for web-based listening.

What has been your career path? How have you arrived to the point where you are? What did you do before?
Started at local public radio station in the U.S. working in development, promotion and production. Became independent radio producer and host, exclusively contracted to NPR. Worked freelance for BBC Radio Scotland over 10-year period. Expanded into various digital platforms via the web and NPR Music. Still contracted to NPR for weekly radio shows and digital content from my Scottish base.

Pro tools, a digital workstation platform for audio production.
What parts of your work are the ones you enjoy most and least?
Enjoy: discovering new music, completing an editing job, interviewing.
Least enjoy: the pressure of deadlines, but they are what keep me creating!
Do you usually keep an eye on the work of your competition and analyze how they have done things?
I don't feel I have "competition" but always enjoy listening to all sorts of good radio in the UK and the US.
How do you learn new techniques? Manuals? Tutorials? Trial and error?
I always learn by doing - and by making mistakes and fixing them!
What new technologies are you experimenting with now?
Developing a format for a web-based music stream.
Does it irk you when something new makes what you've already learned obsolete?
Old skills often come in handy when you least expect it. Plus, it helps to understand the basics in developing your approach to learning new technologies and techniques.
You spend many hours in front of screens and in dark rooms. How do you compensate for that on a personal level?
Family, family, family.
If you have to hire an assistant, what qualifications and qualities do you look for when making your choice?
Passion, curiosity, ability to self-start, intelligent approach to problem solving.
What types of professionals are you used to collaborating with, sharing experiences with, or forming a team with?
Musicians, entrepreneurs, event producers, radio broadcasters.

Current (monthly newspaper for people in public media).
