Interview with:

Frances Kingston-Dill [frandill]

CREATIVITY
How and why did you begin to be creative?
My Mother has always inspired me to be creative. She was always sewing, painting, drawing. We took a beginning quilting class together and it started my love of quilting and fabric.
Your mind is your work tool. How do you take care of it?
I am inspired daily by everything and everyone around me. I am always searching new idea and techniques and trying to keep my mind active.
How do you avoid repeating yourself, or falling into formula? How do you stay fresh?
It is easy to stay fresh, there are always new fabric trends, I am always going to the quilt shops in my area to see the latest fabric arrivals. I attend shows through out the year to see what the up coming trends are going to be.
Who have your teachers been?
My Mother has been my biggest teacher. Her love or art, sewing, cooking and nature. She has given me so much inspiration.
When you accept a job, how much value do you place on each of the following? Money, creative liberty, visibility, and to work with the best.
I put myself in every piece I do. I think of it as my own, how would I like it, is it what I would expect. The money end of it only allows me to move forward.
Have you ever had a job that was so stimulating that you could not get your mind off of it?
Most jobs are like that, I do dream of my work and ideas. It is also hard for me to let some of my projects go, they become a part of me and I truly love them.
"To give birth to ideas." Is this only an expression, or are there really parallels between giving birth and creativity?
When you create something that you have dreamed of and planned out and created it is like a birth and just like letting a child go off into the world, you projects is similar. You wonder if people are going to except them, love them like you do and treat them with the respect that you did creating them.
Does spirituality contribute to your creativity?
My spirituality does contribute to my creativity, it is what keeps me going and believing in myself.
Declaration: With what person or business would you like to work?
I would love for my purses to become a must have item. I would love to see them carried in boutiques and gift shops.
What is the best advertisement you've seen recently?
My best advertisement relating to my business is walking into a funeral with my purse and walking up to a group of mourners and a complete stranger sees my purse and says, Your the purse lady! Word of mouth is always the best form of advertisement.
Do you work well under pressure?
I think I work best under pressure. When I have lots of orders to fill I am much more focused.
How is an idea sold?
All's is takes is one purse to create and idea and another person to feel they can't live without it.
