Interview with:

Franklin J Kennedy [franklinjkennedy]

ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
I mostly draw in MS Paint, I also draw on paper, xerox it at high contrast, then xerox THAT with text passages pasted over it. I really kind of consider myself to be counter-art; I can appreciate "art art", but I prefer the kind of art that people without real "talent" or "creativity" can make, because I consider myself to be one of those people.
What is your message?
my message is to reconsider what is "good" art and what is "bad" art.
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
I post my work on frankblog.tumblr.com
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
I have no inspiration. I draw a head, and then give it a dog body. That's it.
What role does technology play in your creative process?
I love the warmth and fuzziness of older technology; analog photography, zines with lots of black-ink and xeroxes of xeroxed xeroxes... and then once I'm done, I digitize it for permanence.
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?
After I make something, if I can go back to it the next day and still say "I like this", then it must be good.
How should a work of art be evaluated?
Art should be evaluated by how much fun the artist had making it, and how much fun the viewer has viewing it.
MUSIC
What do you do? What is your musical specialty?
I play the guitar, and sing.
Do you work alone or in a group? If in a group, who are the others you work with?
Presently, I'm working on two prospective bands, and in the mean time practicing alone.
Is there a web address where one can listen, see, or read some of your work?
I upload my recordings to frankblog.tumblr.com
Please list any awards, competitions, or other acknowledgments you would like to mention.
Screw that. If you're getting an award, then you're not a real musician.
What was your musical education?
I began guitar lessons in the 8th grade.
Have you ever awoken with a melody created from your dreams?
No, that's very weird.
What should be done to stop piracy?
Piracy is not an issue. The people who are hurt the most by piracy are the industry-giant record labels, which are the ones that ought to be stopped. My opinion is that if an actual artist requests that a community not share their music, then their request should be acknowledged. On most private BitTorrent trackers, it is. Although I disagree with their opinion on music sharing on a philosophical level, I also respect their opinion, because for some artists, music is their main source of income, and they feel that piracy is pulling money from their wallet.
What type of music do you detest?
I simply can't stand popular Country, popular Rock, and contemporary forms of Metal (both hardcore, and scandinavian).
